When I went to Army Engineer courses at Ft. Bellvoir in the days before the Engineer School was moved to Lost in the Woods and civie slime took over Belvoir, the first thing I did after reporting in was drive the Silver Springs Squadron. I loved that store. For some reason the locals around Belvoir didn't like C4 in the morning.
Used to go as a kid, when we could - much larger selection and dioramas you could look at. Lunch next door at another by-gone ...Roy Rogers. Think it was on Georgia Avenue, if I remember correct.
I discovered that my exwife grew up 3 blocks away from the John R location. Went there a couple of times, this is where I first saw the Nichimo 1/200 Japanese destroyers and the Matchbox 1/72 Flower class, all built up and on display! They drove me carzy with their mail order, pre-internet years, in the mid 70s they showed several Russo-Japanese War ships as coming soon. I think they were supposedly from Heller, never showed untill the old Potemkin and Aurora finally showed. In High School I was in a class called DECA Distributive Clubs of America (business class) and for an assignment I had to find out what the costs were for a franchise back when they had them. Man good memories
Odd. Been buying from them for 40 years or more. I can even remember when they had retail stores.
