Re: Weathering 5N Navy Blue paint
The best way to “weather” or tone down a shade is with a neutral lighter gray—not white. Streak the color with very light neutral gray as it dries or use a wash. To get the effect of coats of 5N hammered by the Pacific sea and sun, lay down several thin layers of 5N out of the bottle, and follow with various patches of 5N with neutral grays. I noticed the hull of the carrier Truman certainly did not have a modeler’s eye “perfect,” single tone coat. It was patch work. If this was the case with a peacetime carrier in 2011, I can assure you it was more pronounced in WWII.
