Early P-61As were known to experience buffeting problems from the turret and often removed.
In the Pacific, the P-61's 4-20 mm were adequate to deal with Japanese aircraft structure.
Perhaps part of the mount in the thread-origin photo had its origin in the "informal supplies network" in that area of ops?

It looks like the arrangement of the MGs is the same as the dorsal quad 50 on the P-61 Black Widow. If this photo does not work maybe the address will.
