Ralph I donít use the lower hull so I do not know.
What am saying is the Academy upper hull is that Trumpeter wide. Now maybe that is by design for the Yorktowns were exactly that, narrow in hull and wide in upper beam. Myself I really do not care about the lower hull.
Here is what I do care about as a water line builder. I purchased 3 HP kits with poor flight deck fits. I purchased every offering of Tomís kits and his lower hull and poor flight deck fits. I purchased the Trumpeter kits of all 3 sisters and they go together without me having to be disappointed and start chopping. Granted the upper Trumpeter hull of Hornet is wider than that Trumpeter/Merit but once they are painted and flight deck goes down who really is going to know but you and I ? It is not like I have choice in the matter.
I try to keep my builds strictly OB and the Yorktowns will be no exception. I will upgrade the weapons, aircraft, radars, rafts, decals and photo-etch where my skills permit. With that said the one exception I will make for the Yorktowns will be the late era Enterprise of Tomís in which I will cut away his 5Ē38 galleries and extend them with Tamiya gun galleries so they are no longer masked. Accurate no. But then I had no choice did I .
I stopped chasing Unicorns in the hobby. I have to fight paint and accessories shortages, poor instructions, poor manufacturing and rising prices. So they may not be accurate but it is the enjoyment of the build and the remembrance of those that served.
If the Academy upper hull is as bad as the Trumpeter Hornet upper hull, how then does it mate with its own slender lower hull? If what you claim is true, it should mate with the Trumpeter lower hull, and the photos show that is a different animal. I have lots of trouble with what you claim in this. The photos do not match what you are stating with that sentence.
The rest of what you write here is correct enough. Trumpeter Yorktown and Enterprise uppers are better than the Trumpeter Hornet, so it is possible to use them to correct the Hornet kit in a waterline configuration.
The upper Academy hull in 1/700 is that of Trumpeter Hornet. I donít use lower hulls. But if I am reading everybodyís complaints properly the upper hull was just a bad as the lower hull on Trumpeter Hornet. The Trumpeter Enterprise and Yorktown has a slender upper hull as compared to Trumpeter Hornet.
It is possible to create a better waterline Hornet of Doolittle Raid using the Trumpeter Enterprise hull. The flight deck forward and aft would have to be modified. Some 20mm tubs removed. Use the Trumpeter island or if Model Monkey offers one. A bit easier if you wish to do a Hornet of Santa Cruz as gun mounts of Enterprise and Hornet almost mirrored each other.
