Re: Other rusty looking USN ships
I used to live near the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. I was fairly used to seeing USN ships in ALL phases of weathering, from good to bad. However, I was totally blown away by an event in the Turks and Caicos Islands after one of the hurricanes of 2010, The HMS Manchester tied up next to us one day. It was SPOTLESS! I was really impressed with the high degree of maintenance on this ship compared to what I had been used to seeing on US ships. HOWEVER, what really got me was that a few months later I learned that when I saw the Manchester it was getting ready to sail back to the UK and to the breakers! What a beautiful ship! What beautiful condition (externally) it was in! And what a shame! It seemed like it would have years of useful life left. Nope.
