They had little to go on--a recognition silhouette and some pictures in Life
--and when you look at one in profile and waterlined, it has a resemblance to the real thing.
But the beam was determined apparently by the need to put an Arado 196 in a hatch with the wings spread, distorting the entire proportions of the model compared to the real ship.
Hatch #2 hides the Arado.
And a real model.
