As for boot topping I stick together two #11 new scalpel blades using double sided scotch and suitable spacing and I just cut two parallel lines at the same time with only a very gentle pressure.
Parafilm is strechable for complex curved surfaces, extremely thin, so no "paint border walls". It doesn't damaged the paint below (I even used it above a decal to correct a defect in the vicinity with no damage). At last this film can be laid for a very long time without damaging anything below (my record time is 15 months).
