Re: Which WW2 carriers flew the Corsair night fighter?
Looking thru my books I have found that at the Truk raid(February 1944) night fighters on fleet carriers were detachments primiarly with the F6F Hellcat. There were some use of the Corsair by the Enterprise had 4 corsairs and Intrepid had 4 corsairs from VF(N)101, Now the Saratoga had an entire squadron of Hellcats called VF(N)53 at Iwo Jima. The Marines established several night fighter squadrons and were flown off Escort carriers to Islands like Saipan and operated the Corsair from land bases. Also they flew the corsair from Essex class carriers at battle of Okinawa . There's no reference if they had nigth fighter detachments. HTH.
If I recall Enterprise and Saratoga were both designated night carriers but there was one other. I can not recall if it was a fleet CV, CVL, or CVE. Independence comes to mind. Anybody know which of the 3 would have flown the Corsair night fighter?
