Re: Which WW2 carriers flew the Corsair night fighter?
F4U-2s saw combat with VF(N)-101 aboard USS Enterprise and USS Intrepid in early 1944, VF(N)-75 in the Solomon Islands, and VMF(N)-532 on Tarawa.
I do not think that the F4U-4N made it into combat before the Japanese surrendered. I cannot pin down if a VMF(N) made it to Okinawa or not before the end of the war, but I am almost certain none made to a carrier.
If I recall Enterprise and Saratoga were both designated night carriers but there was one other. I can not recall if it was a fleet CV, CVL, or CVE. Independence comes to mind. Anybody know which of the 3 would have flown the Corsair night fighter?
