A tight fit on a wood deck is a must, any gap runs the risk of being a source for a leak. An alternative to a tight fit, as mentioned in a previous post, is caulking. ELCO ultimately went to two solid sheets of marine plywood for the 80 foot boats. Not only did this reduce costs of fabrication it also addresses maintenance of a plank deck to avoid leaks. Most modern boats have fiberglass decks. Some high cost yachts and sailboats still provide wood decks. Bring your wheelbarrow full of cash for these. The craftsmanship costs and you are blessed with constant maintenance. But there is nothing like a planked wood deck.
