The only covering on these decks was paint. In the South Pacific these boards would have swelled tight due to humidity. Sanded and painted the individual planks would have been hard to see. In the Mediterranean the decks were regularly caulked to fill the gaps between the planks. After painting the caulk, at a slight distance would give the appearance of a contiguous sheet of wood.
