Don't make unreal comparisons.
Of course I don't buy a new compressor for every kit, or the other extreme suggestions you make. Though I do have rather a lot of references. But it is naive to suggest that the cost of a kit is the only cost to be included in your hobby. Rather like assuming fuel costs in mpg is the only measure of a car's costs. If you buy a compressor then that cost has to be spread over the number of kits you will use that for, and don't forget to add in the energy bills for running it. If you work from a dedicated hobby room rather than a corner of a bedroom then you are paying more for a larger house than you need, with associated heating and lighting costs. I kept the same size house but had a loft converted - not cheap. If you stack your models/tools/references on shelves or in a cupboard then there's extra expense for furniture.
Every modeller will have an individual approach, but there is no way to avoid expenses going beyond the kit itself.
Disagree completely. Do you buy a new compressor, airbrush, tools etc for each build? Scale modelling is a very cost efficient form of entertainment. Notice I didn't say cheap....what is nowadays. Unless of course you need 367 reference books for each build and buy every piece of a/m doodad and count each rivet and DO buy a new compressor each time you make a model.
And... and ...you get to look at your masterpiece year after year. Do tickets to a sports event or the theatre or a restaurant or a round of gold boast that advantage???
If you bemoan the cost of your hobby then sounds like your hobby is not doing its' job...ie that of making you HAPPY ..........
Not so cheap if you add in tools, paints, airbrush, compressor etc not to mention references and proportionate share of computer/broadband costs.
its no wonder to me that the hobby is now only for adults!! look at the insane money it costs to build a frikin model..my nephew not too many years back wanted to do some car modeling but was shut out because by the time you buy a model at around 25-30 bucks ( thats a cheap one) and all the paints and glue your near a hundred bucks!! AK wants 7-9 bucks for 1 little bottle of weather wash!! over 10 with shipping..we better get our cooperate acts together or this hobby is gona be DEAD after the baby boomers are gone!! PPG paint or someone needs to step up and save our hobby!! im done..Jay
