a lot of new modelers are returning 40 year olds who have money, they will pick up our mantel and carry on.
I agree that the model industry is getting very pricey. For example, a premium house paint runs $65 a gallon. A gallon of a 17 milliliter hobby paint runs around $225 per gallon. Now there is a difference in the formula, production scale and packaging, but still...
I see some 1/72 airplane kits that run $45-50 or more, and 1/350 ships well over $100. Now again, these are often well engineered kits with photo etch parts, so there is real value for builders. But once the majority of us (many over 60 years old & with disposable income) move on to that Big Hobby Shop in the sky, many of the manufacturers are going to see a big drop in demand unless they can attract another generation of builders.
One possible solution for younger aspiring modelers is Atlantis Models. They are releasing repops of previous kits from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. An expanding selection, decent prices, and easy for a beginner to assemble. A good start to honing skills before buying that $100 dollars worth of kit and supplies mentioned above.
