I use them both AFTER I have coated the surface with Pledge with Future and it has dried for a couple of days. Sometimes I will also put Future over the decal after a day or so, then let it dry, and at the end put the final clear coat over the Future. I don't put many decals on, either, and sometimes have only one chance for success, so I don't care how long this process takes.
BTW, if you close your eyes and smell the decal setting bottle(s) you will get the smell of vinegar.
I have been told that vinegar was the solution of choice many years ago before all these other things came onto the market.
Micro Set is for lubricating the surface so you can move thedecal around while it is still wet.
SolvaSet is like MicroSol, for softening the decal after it is in place so the decal snugs down around the model's surface. OK to use this softening agent after the decal has dried.
In my experience, SolvaSet was stronger than MicroSol, and I used SolvaSet if the MicroSol didn't work very well. However, the bottle of SolvaSet that I bought most recently seems less effective than what I remember. The smell seems a little different, indicating a newer formula, like everything else.
Chemistry majors among us may have stories about their use of vinegar and something else to do the deed for a much better price. I am not a chemist.
Also, Testors, in their Modelmaster line which is going away, had a decal setting solution. I think I have used it a few times - don't remember how it compared to MicroSol/Solvaset.
I don't use many decals.
I'm not sure how many there are, but at least a half dozen or more.
I've always used solvaset. It's a fairly strong solution and usually works well, though you don't have much time for positioning if the decal moves.
How many decal solutions are there to work with?
I'm largely familiar with Micro set and Micro Sol.
Currently I'm building the AMT Vulcan Warp Shuttle
which has translucent decals. Their thin but it helps blend in to the paint job of the model. But according to a review and actually appling them
Micro Sol doesn't work good with these decals.
Thanks in Advance for any replies.
