Re: KM Scharnhorst - while it was supposed to be "enlarged" and "improved"....
I would tend to discount that only because the Bismarcks were already programmed and building with 15 inchers. Putting them on the Scharnhorst-class wouldn't have really altered anything in terms of upsetting the British since 15 inch gunned battleships were already under construction.
There is also a story that Hitler stuck with 11" guns because he didn't want to provoke the British with a jump to 15" guns.
It was mainly to save time that they stayed with the 11" guns. It was already in production.
I read somewhere that originally the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were to be pocket battleships but the decision was made to enlarge them with an extra turret so that might explain why they stuck with the same turret and gun calibre
Graf Spee types, it is clear the scale of armor was "battleship". Often cited as a shortcoming, are the 11" main armament. Germany developed a very good 12" gun for WW1. Anyone have a citation as to why was IT not chosen for the Scharnhorst class? Design time for a new turret or what?
