I don't know about 7th Fleet's battleship, but...
Per Halsey himself:
TG 38.1 (McCain) planes did engage at 1310 local time on the 25th. Halsey initially estimated that he could not arrive before 0800 on 26th with any aid for 7th fleet beyond McCain's attacks. After he formed TG 34.5 with New Jersey and Iowa, he reported he would be there by 0100 on the 26th. He later implies he showed up around midnight of the 26th to find it all over with. https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/1952/may/battle-leyte-gulf
I watched a documentary today about this battle. They kinda made it sound like the IJN just nearly won. Ok so I have some questions.
If the IJN BB force had not retreated and kept attacking.
How long until they could have destroyed our invasion fleet.
How long would it have taken the 7th fleet warships to engage. I know these were the older BBs but would have put up quite a fight.
How long would it have taken the 3rd fleet carrier planes and warships to engage.
