I see nothing controversial about this.

Literary critic Paul Fussell summed up the prospective Operation Olympic infantryman's attitude in his famous "Thank God for the Atomic Bomb". He had been severely wounded in the ETO, and he was standing by for use in Operation Olympic. The Americans of 1945 had no more patience for Imperial Japan, and who can blame them? Most of our fighting men were dragooned into the services, and they had little enthusiasm for dying for democracy (as FDR put it). My father's family had hardscrabbled all through the Depression. In 1941, he was working for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, finally able to live a good life. He had no desire to fight the Japanese or the Germans. This was the generation raised on "All Quiet On The Western Front" and the hearings on the Hill on war profiteering in WWI which revealed what the war was primarily about. I inherited my father's cynicism about war, he was on a Fleet Submarine in the Pacific. For him it was not a "crusade," it was a nearly terminal interruption in his real life. In 1945 he almost had to participate in a mass execution of Japanese sailors still alive after their convoy had been sunk by the submarines of his squadron. He and the other white hats had zero enthusiasm for this: "enemy or not, we did not like shooting fellow sailors in the water." Luckily the sub's captain vetoed this activity.
My father had been "volunteered" by the USN to participate in an attack on Singapore harbor. It was an almost all Royal Navy divers affair, but he and other Yanks were added to make it inter-allied. The atomic bombs cancelled what had come to be seen as an absurd suicide op. My father was "saved by the bomb," and self-interest, in all honesty, eliminates any ex post facto moralizing on my part. Am I to ask for a refund? "I am appalled by the bombs, therefore, shoot me because I never would have drawn breath if Stanley Spencer had gotten the chop in Singapore harbor. Sincerely, the woke Jeff Spencer." https://www.uio.no/studier/emner/hf/iakh/HIS1300MET/v12/undervisningsmateriale/Fussel%20-%20thank%20god%20for%20the%20atom%20bomb.pdf
