Re: Plans for HMS Illustrious in 1940
Thanks, Mike!!! Very good of you.
The plans in the report are really useful; they seem to suggest four pom-pom directors, not five. Aside from that, some really interesting stuff!
I would love to build the Heller Illustrious some day, and am trying to figure out what I'd need to fix up the kit.
There are some excellent resources here--though perhaps for Illustrious in a later fit: https://www.armouredcarriers.com/battle-damage-to-hms-illustrious https://www.armouredcarriers.com/adm26783/2014/10/16/illustrious-january-10-damage-report-bomb-shell https://www.armouredcarriers.com/landing
I will try to find plans for the right fit for you...
Does anyone know of any good plans of the Illustrious as completed in 1940, other than the ones in Warship Profile No. 10 and in Norman Friedman's "British Carrier Aviation"? I don't remember any articles (with or without plans) about the Illustrious class in "Warship" or "Warship International" over the years, but were there any I've forgotten?
I haven't checked to see what plans the NMM Brass Foundry has.
Based on the Profile plan and the plan in Friedman, did the Illustrious have four HACS for the 4.5in guns and five pom-pom directors, three above the bridge and two abaft the funnel? Are the plans incorrect in showing Type 285 radar on the HACS directors?
