I think it was from a car carburetor.
As I recall reading his initial regulators were modified torpedo parts.
Two stage regulator/single hose system is post war. Combat divers did not like all the bubbles Cousteau's Aqualung put out. Nor does it seem to have been manufactured in any quantity till post war.

Richard Widmark is the name. They did NOT use tanks and regulators, just rebreathers or snorkles. The Scuba we typically associate with diving was not invented until post war.
