Many years (and pounds) ago I crawled through those hatches and was inside one of the turrets on the USS New Jersey. Even so I don't remember where exactly they were, just how difficult it was to get in and out.
I guess you have found an error either in the aftermarket set, or in the way the kit turret is molded--or both. So congratulations on finding the mistake.
Having said that, I don't know that many people would realize what you have just brought to everyone's attention. My guess is that this modeler does not know. And even if he does know now, as a result of this thread, I don't know what he would have to say.
Furthermore, I don't know whether the error could be noticed when the turret is upright and in place on the completed model---unless the turret was rotated off the centerline of the ship and you could see underneath the rear. So all the discussion about IPMS judging may not be applicable to this particular situation.
I do agree in general with all the commentary, though.
