Reuben James MS-2 July thru Oct. 41
Clark MS-1 Oct. 41
Half dozen or so other DDs moored with Clark in Ms-1 and MS-2 with one or two possibly in MS-3.
None of them have an MS-5 bow wave though.
Answering your question would require a lot of effort and even then may not be a complete answer. Ms 5 was directed for evaluation on many ships, down to a few destroyers. In the limited documentation I have, there are no destroyers listed painted in Ms 1 with having Ms 5 FALSE BOW WAVES applied. In the evaluations directed and undertaken in mid-1941, two Destroyer Divisions were tasked to be painted in different measures;
DesDiv 6 units were painted as follows;
USS CASE (DD-370) .... Ms 3 (Light Gray) with Ms 5 (Painted bow wave)
USS CUMMINGS (DD-365) .... Ms 1 (Dark Gray)
USS SHAW (DD-373) .... Ms 2 (Graded System - MODIFIED)
USS TUCKER (DD-374) .... Ms 1 - MODIFIED with a lighter shade of Dark Gray System
DesDiv 17 units (this was before they were reassigned to the Atlantic Fleet) were painted as follows;
USS BUCK (DD-420) .... Ms 1 (Dark Gray)
USS MORRIS (DD-417) .... Ms 2 (Graded)
USS WAINWRIGHT (DD-419) .... Ms 3 (Light Gray) with Ms 5 (False Bow Wave)
USS ROE (DD-418) .... MS 4 (BLACK)
As you can see, The only ships painted with Ms 5 were two units painted in Ms 3 (Light Gray). The DesDiv 6 units can be seen in the famous color photo taken at San Diego.
How then, "could" a destroyer painted in Ms 1 somewhere at some point have been painted with a False Bow Wave, I guess so. There were a lot of experiments going on. However, the documentation for the Spring-Summer 1941 experiments in the Pacific appear to be fairly documented and none are mentioned. What was going on in the Atlantic, is another story and appears to be less documented.
In any case, Ms 5 False Bow Waves were found to be "INEFFECTIVE" from evaluations on Battleships and Cruisers, which many units had Ms 5 applied.
There was a follow-on set of experiments directed in August 1941 and carried out in September-October 1941 with the newly directed Camo Measures.
DesDiv 9 units involved in the new round of experiments were as follows;
USS DRAYTON (DD-366) .... MS 11 - Modified using "Sapphire Blue"
USS FLUSSER (DD-368) .... MS 11 using 5-S ... was changed to using 5-N
USS LAMSON (DD-367) .... Ms 2 - Modified using newer paints
USS MAHAN (DD-364) .... Ms 12
These twelve destroyers are the only ones I'm aware of being painted in anything except Ms 1 until the orders to paint into Ms 11 with 5-S and then 5-N.
Does anyone know if any of the US Navy destroyers wore MS-1/5 in 1941? Or any other measure with a false bow wave?
