Re: US Navy Fleet Problem XXII
Not really, prior to WW2 the bulk of US naval strength was in the Pacific .
The outbreak of WW2 in Europe caused the USN to transferr ships to the Atlantic. The US began escorting convoys to the mid atlantic to meet the RN and exchange merchant ships that were returning empty to get more supplies and send in
supplies to England that been alone for a year after France,Norway,Netherlands,Luxemberg, Beligum,Denmark,Greece and Poland were conqurored by Germany. The US sent troops to occupy Iceland because it was owned Denmark. Also 3 of the 6 US Carriers were in the Atlantic in 1941 because of this.
Wouldn’t that be all the more reason to proceed with the exercise?
Well according the Cressman book on the Chronology of the USN in WW2 . The exercise
was cancelled due to the worsting world situation.
This exercise was scheduled for the Spring of 1941 but was cancelled for some reason. Anyone have any info why it was cancelled?
