The first USN carrier was named Langley,
after the Secretary of the Smithsonian. Then there was the Wright, FDR and the Forestal.
The Franklin was named after the battle.
Miller is no bigger a hero than Presley O'bannon, John Paul Jones or Stephen Decatur.
It was the custom of the Navy to name destroyers, destroyer escorts and frigates after men who gave exceptional service in uniform. Consistent with that tradition, it would be fine to name a destroyer USS Dorie Miller.
The practice of naming capital ships after cheap politicians is loathsome. These were names after states. CV's were named after battles and previous distinguished ships. We never should have abandoned this practice. We are a nation of ideals, not idolatry.
