PT's had a certain glamour about them, it looks like they used it here to help sell War Bonds. Either that or the streets were too narrow for a battleship:

I think you will even find photos of Liberty ships being christianed. Most ship have sponsors.
At least among cruise liners. A celebrity will be made the godmother of the ship. They are present at the beginning of the commercial life. I guess you could call it commissioning. Their photo is present in the main atrium, etc They May be someone like Oprah , or some minor royalty of Norway (for Royal Norwegian). The company owners daughter was the godmother of the Danube river cruiser.
