If the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau had met the evacuation force then Mr. Churchill would have never become PM of the UK. It would have been "Lord Halifax". The U.K. would have accepted German cease fire proposals floated after the fall of France in 1940.
Instead a British Commander got mad at his #1 and decided to take a British task force off station, unheard of for the Royal Navy. A lucky torpedo hit from a brave destroyer forced the battleship duo to return to port.
BTW, once Bismarck was observing the American Civil War and commented "Gott

In the early part of 1940 Bismarck would have amended his statement to "Gott
