In this context it means aircraft ordered by and paid for by the British, but commandeered by the USAAC.

4 LB-30s led by MGEN Clarence Tinker staged tgrough Midway for an attack on Wake. Think they arrived 6 June, as the mission was flown on the 7th, and Tinker's plane disappeared near Midway.
