Then there was O'Flaherty and Gaido. I don't know if they witnessed and carriers sinking, probably not, but they sure were floating around in a rubber raft near enough to be picked up by a Japanese destroyer, interrogated, and later executed after the battle.
The story of Ensign Osmus is similar, and just as tragic.
I know it got some stuff wrong. Like two men floating in the pacific watching the battle take place. I thought, maybe they needed a device to tall a story. Alas, too bad.
I haven't seen the movie yet but Ensign George Gay a Douglas TDB Devastator pilot from the USS Hornet was shot down after unsuccessfully attacking the IJN carrier Soryu and witnessed the subsequent diving bombing attacks and sinking of 3 of the four Japanese aircraft carriers present. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_H._Gay_Jr
