For the most part, you're looking at Hollywood's attempt at depicting a very large battle in the space of 2 hours and 18 minutes. For the most part, it's an accurate depiction of the first six months of the Pacific War, severely compressed, using two of the major US admirals (Nimitz and Halsey) and three of the lesser known officers (Layton, McCluskey and Best) to tell the story. Some of the CGI was over the top, but for the most part, except for Best's final dive bombing of Hiryu (Emmerich's tribute to the final escape in Independence Day, IMO), it was smoothly integrated into the story. The major missing piece for me was the complete absence of F4F's in the Enterprise's air group, but that's my opinion. It's a good two hours of eye candy.
Oh, the one BIG thing they blew was having TF 16 make it to Coral Sea from the Doolittle raid in time to see Lexington sink. That and Lexington looked like some bizarre hybrid of herself and Yorktown. There, now I've been critical...
