Re: British Navy painted decks red in WW2
Admiral Andrew Cunningham, in his memoirs A Sailors Odyssey
, (published in 1951 so it is hardly a secret) wrote on page 530 - "To facilitate the recognition of our destroyers their bridge structures were painted red."
Even that did not stop the American airmen from attacking them and the Bicester
was hit in the wardroom in one such attack when carrying out Operation Retribution
with the Zetland
, to intercept the Germans fleeing from North Africa in May 1943.
