Yes, I was able to do some shifting before pressing the decals down into their final position. What worked for me was to position one end of each decal down to make sure that it lined up with the previous piece, and then put the rest of the decal just above (but not touching) the deck, to ensure that it would be going where it was supposed to go. If good, then I would push down firmly, starting with the end that was already down. If not good, I would gently lift the decal back up and start over. As long as the first decal is well placed, everything else seemed to fall into place, but I would hate to imagine what would happen if the first decal was not placed well. If I remember correctly, I started from the stern, because it had more difficult shapes, in effect forcing me to get that first piece right.
In summary, I was worried that this could be a disaster, but it actually worked quite well.
