The Japanese aviators were not assigned to specific ships at Pearl Harbor. They knew the general mooring location but not the specific ship locations on 12/07/41. Thus thee Utah was hit because she was in a berth often used by carriers; the timber on deck may have contributed too.
Fascinating documentation provided by Tracy. My question is do you suppose the jap aircrews were aware and used the recognition colors to locate their assigned targets rather than or in addition to silhouettes?
