The Italian silhouette was my taken on the altered appearance. Apparently the intention was to produce a silhouette of the Prince of Wales - more appropriate. The dummy funnel was to be constructed of metal & canvas and painted grey. False signals were concocted to further the deception. Apparently the work was started & progressed slowly.
Even it were true (rather doubtful!), Italy was still an enemy, and any Italian ship would still be engaged! Anyway, how would an Italian battleship pass through Gibraltar and not be detected (and sunk!)?
It seems that there was an intention to alter Bismark's appearance by raising a dummy funnel on the 25.05.1941. The result would have been a silhouette not unlike an Italian battleship the real & dummy being very close together. The obvious question is did it happen?
