When the series first came out I was nine or 10 and thought this was the greatest thing and Boyington became a hero and the Corsair was my favourite plane. When the series came out on DVD as an adult I groaned at the number of howlers (bombers striking Guam from the Solomon's? ) in the series but I still have some affection for it and the dogfighting scenes are quite good
From what I heard, Boyington had some tall explaining to do to his squadron mates at the reunions about the series.
Then if that wasn't enough, he endorsed Masajiro "Mike" Kawato claims that he was the pilot who shot down Boyington. Never one to miss the attention, they toured around as a show making this claim, that was later disproven.
It seems to be an article of faith among the Hollywood types that only misfits, losers and outcasts can win wars and get things done.
