Paravane and Battleships

I had a discussion with a friend about paravanes on battleships. It seems that [almost] every battleship was equipped with paravanes. One would think that the concept of using battleships as minesweepers is overkill and the effectiveness would be limited. A mine close to the ship's path is not going to be pushed out of the way by the paravane. If a mine is far away, it is not going to hit the ship anyway. So there would be a narrow range of effectiveness.
Neither of us could find any example of a battleship actually cutting a mine cable. The basic references on battleships contain little information.
Did a U.S. battleship ever cut an enemy mine cable with a paravane? DId any battleship ever cut an enemy mine cable with a paravane?
