You said that you had 'some' success with brass plugs, so why don't you coat the threads of those brass plugs with JB Weld and screw them in. VIOLA! Done.

Btw... JB Weld was first developed as a turbine exhaust seam sealant that is heat-resistant and expansion/contraction resistent. When mixed 50/50 as per instructions, I have never seen JB 'melt' on anything. Just my 2c.
