I must apologize...L'Shana Tova (HAPPY NEW YEAR) is not the proper greeting in this timeframe. IT is the tradition of Jews for many generations to celebrate this as the CIVIL new year, and most JEWISH CALENDARS change yearly dates in this timeframe.
HOWEVER...this is TALMUDIC Tradition. No command in scripture, nor in the TORAH has ever been given to observe this timeframe as the "NEW YEAR" or as the start of the year.
In fact, in Exodus we see MOSES told the timeframe of ABIB (Nisan) which falls around the time of March-April on the Roman Calendar, we see the LORD declare to MOSES in Scripture that:
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying,
2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD's passover.
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
so we see in the opening verses detailing the PASSOVER, that:
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying,
2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
So, this matter of ROSH HA'SHANA, this matter of THE NEW YEAR being celebrated in this timeframe, is a matter of Talmudic device, and one of confusion. DOES not every other calendar on the planet consider it's NEW YEAR to be "THE BEGINNING OF MONTHS?"
OUR winters in the western world are comprised of about 5 months which begin in the end of one year, and continue into the next calendar year. But they are not noted by both, the winter of '08, means the winter that began in '08 and continued to '09. But that aside, the months themselves...January always belongs to the year of date, not the year prior. THE YEAR is comprised of MONTHS as is the week comprised of days...so the truth of the matter is, by the SCRIPTURAL method of keeping time...the new year, THE BEGINNING OF MONTHS, occurs in the timeframe of ABIB.
So this timeframe is indeed a Holy day, and ANNUAL SABBATH, but it is "YOM TERUAH" and not "THE NEW YEAR" rather the day of TRUMPS!
This timeframe is oft referred to "The beginning of the HIgh Holy Days" and that too, is Tradition, and not TRUTH! There are only 3 HIGH HOLY DAYS, 3 HIGH SABBATHS in each year. Each is also one of the SEVEN annual Sabbath Days, and in the coming Timeframe...there are 4 of the 7 annual Sabbaths, of which ONLY ONE is a HIGH HOLY SABBATH according to Scripture.
SCRIPTURAL HOLY DAYS: September 4th 2013-September 27th, 2013 / 1 Tishri 5774 - 22 Tishri 5774

This timeframe also begins a 10 day timeframe of self reflection, and of repentance and seeking forgiveness from those we have wronged, and from God. NOTE that there were Historically "SIN OFFERINGS" to be made in this timeframe. God can forgive us of sins we have committed against him, but of those sins we have committed against others, we must seek forgiveness from them. When Christ was asked "How many times must we forgive those who have sinned against us?"
He answered "Seventy times Seven." You see both the question and the answer, were referencing "THE DAYS OF AWE!"
In this time of year, we are to seek forgiveness, and some would take advantage of such in that, next year, they may continue the same sins against their brother, thinking that Next TISHRI, they could obtain forgiveness. This is wrong. Still Christ admonished to forgive "Seventy Times Seven."
We don't extend forgiveness solely for the sake of those who have wronged us, more often than not, we do so in spite of them, for our own sakes!
"If you forgive not your brother, how then shall your Father in Heaven forgive you your trespasses? He that forgives, shall be FORGIVEN!" Also counsel of the Messiah in these matters.
You see there is another means by which people take advantage in these matters, and that is those who have been wronged. What if they hid their face so that their brother who wronged them could not find them? This too is wrong.
3 times in the year, the people were to gather. This is one of those times. IT was believed that GOD at the end of YOM KIPPUR passes out blessings or curses for that matter, for the COMING YEAR.
SO people are very busy in the ten days between YOM TERUAH (1 Tishri)the day of The Shofar and Yom Kippur (10 Tishri, the Day of Atonment). IF one failed to seek out those whom they had wronged, if one failed to obtain forgiveness in such matters from their brethren, than that sin would carry over for JUDGEMENT by the LORD in the matter, and impact ones blessings in the coming year.
Some of this is Talmudic tradition, but some is indeed TORAH, Scriptural and one has to sift through such to know which is which. But just the same, the PRACTICE was in place during the lifetime of Christ Yeheshua, and in such, these were the matters being referenced when the question came, and the answer regarding "How many times should we forgive our brother?"
Now who is that takes advantage of us more than anyone else? Our neighbors? Our friends? or our very own FAMILY?! We all know it is the latter of the three! Family oft takes advantage solely because they are FAMILY! They expect forgiveness to come later, they expect to "Get away with it" and why? Because they are FAMILY!
You see the answer then, if you see it in proper context of being a reference to the Yearly Festival and "THE DAYS OF AWE/DAYS OF REPENTANCE" in the month of Tishri, would then cover 70 years TIMES 7 or 490 years...well more than several LIFETIMES of any who lived in the first century C.E.!
In fact, while we know that there are Biblical records of some who lived hundreds of years, such as Methusalah, Noah, and others, Hundreds of years before Christ Yeheshua walked the earth, King David penned in Psalm 90:
PSA 90:9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.
PSA 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
So Well before the first Century C.E., it was established that the NATURAL LIFESPAN given, "THE DAYS OF OUR YEARS ARE THREE SCORE AND TEN" or 70 years!
So when Christ was asked "How oft must we forgive our Brother his Trespasses?" He was being asked a legitimate question as some would only see offendors twice a year, the occasion they took advantage, and then not again until The month of TISHRI during the DAYS OF AWE/REPENTANCE!
And what he was really being asked is..."Do we have to put up with these people...do we have to continue forgiving them the rest of our lives?"
And Christ's answer was not only "YES" but emphatically so..."NOT ONLY DO YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE THEM THROUGHOUT YOUR ENTIRE LIFETIME (70 years), YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE THEM for SEVEN LIFETIMES!"
Hence the TRUE MEANING OF SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN!
So this TIMEFRAME, the NEXT 10 days, lead up to...
10 Tishri = Sunset Friday Sept 13th 2013 thru Sunset Saturday Sept 14th 2013

36 Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein.

2 - Pentecost (Shavu'ot) - On a Sunday, very late in spring, fifty days from the first Sunday following (after) The Passover.
