Snow density to water ratio is something like 8 to 1, varying with temperature and size of snowflake.
So of course you'll see results when melting an ice cube, not so much on the snow.
Ask any winter camper that's ever melted snow for drinking purposes, it takes a lot of it.
AS for the plastic smell....that was unburned lighter fuel, sort of like creosote but for butane.
They had butane fumes there, causing the black and the smell.
With that said, I'm sure there's all sorts of crap that falls with the snow....it's far from clean :-(
