Most of my time is now spent teaching small wind and solar PV technology at community and tech colleges. One of my primary goals is to educate the general public about what wind and wind turbines will and will not do.
I see a ton of "new and improved" stuff on the internet, for sale on Craig's list and, unfortunately, installed for unsuspecting end users. People will buy this stuff with good intentions but they are not what I would call educated consumers.
If someone told you that a new car with a gasoline driven engine would get 90 miles per gallon, you would know right away that this can't be true....you are an educated consumer.
I don't want to spend a lot of time on my soapbox here....and Plantlady, I certainly do not want you to think that I'm jumping on you for your post....I've been reading your posts for many years now and I know that you are a level headed and intelligent person.
But, like most people, you do not have the information that you need in order to separate the wind turbine "wheat" from the chaff ;-)
With that said, this article is simply a press release by the company that makes this turbine, in hopes of selling what is obviously a real P.O.S. There's a great saying that I stole from the Onion years ago and use in most of my Power Point presentations...."Here's an Amazing Breakthrough....Needed to Fix the Problems Created by the Previous Amazing Breakthrough!"
Bottom line....when a company must promote their product by criticizing the competitor, there's a problem. Some of the worst ones I see is when a turbine manufacturer touts their machine as being bird friendly, or they have broken the Betz limit on rotor efficiency (59% by the way), will generate energy in 2 or 3 mph winds, will pay for itself in 2 or 3 years, and the list goes on.
Anyway, I broke my promise of not standing on this infernal soapbox very long....I'll end by quoting this company....
" Saphon Energy has conjured a new blade-less wind turbine device"....must be magic ;-)
I now return you to your regularly scheduled reading ;-)
Merry Christmas everyone!
