Re: 1976 Xmas Perm A Family salon
Brilliantly written and a great read with so many things resonating. I've been to a few ladies' salons in London where they had a "men's room" and in each case these rooms seemed to have the oldest dryers in the place. One salon in Mitcham had such a room and, almost always, the same male stylist attended to men in there. He was a very nice chap who maybe ought to be on here as he would often refer to the dryer - a domed black and silver one with no visor, just a deep, metal hood. His remarks were of the type, "Let's get you under now, it's time to make you sweat!", "We men are made of strong stuff, you don't need the temperature controller do you?" and, jokingly, "Back to check on you in two hours!". He took trouble to make sure the dryer was as far down on me as possible and sometimes even seeing out from under it was tricky. Those, solid hood dryers really did roast you and his quip about two hours wasn't the exaggeration it might have been. When he took me out, he usually tilted the dryer hood back but left it nearby "...in case I need to pop you back in the oven for a bit longer". In that room and under that dryer especially, I also wondered how much longer I could stand the inferno before passing out.
Only had sets but loved every minute of it - even being somewhat brutally force-dried.
