I was about three years late, but I started playing "Super Mario Maker" yesterday. I hope that by revealing two courses I uploaded, it doesn't just give hackers some information to exploit:
448F-0000-03CF-6104
B69C-0000-03CF-619B
When you first start the game, I don't think you can recreate every element from level 1-1 of the 8-bit "Super Mario Bros." At least, I couldn't figure out how to make a pipe where you travel down to a bonus coin room. Plus, I don't think they give you the fire flower or the invincibility star right away (assuming those are in level 1-1).
Even with those limits when you first start the game, there are other ideas that may not have appeared anywhere in "SMB." One thing is definitely adding items into the bricks or the question blocks. I think the expectation is how those would be coins, or the mushrooms, or another power-up. From what I could tell, you can put piranha plant, goomba, koopa, or even a spring/trampoline inside the blocks (for whatever value that might add to the gameplay). It's a similar idea with the pipes. If you put goomba inside, I think they'll keep spawning and walking to the left.
So, using those first 10 tools, I just created a ground level with a tall pipe at the end and some longer jumps to make (onto single blocks near the goal, with no solid ground).
Maybe the first "unlock" you get expanded my game to where I could use the "New Super Mario Bros. U" skin. I haven't even played that game yet, except possibly as a demo. There was also a way to pick either a ground/outdoor level, or the underground theme (kind of blue and black).
My next set of tools wasn't supposed to activate until tomorrow, but I think a timer let me have them a little early. I mostly remember Lakitu, the spiny enemies, fire flower, invincibility star, and those red platforms that float around. I kind of made an underground "SMB" level with those elements. I guess the only trick was how you can ride inside the Lakitu cloud. In the original game, I picture how you jumped on him, and the cloud just disappeared (?).
Basically, there's the creation part. Then, I guess the most fun aspect of the game is how you're trying out levels that other people have uploaded, and they sometimes return the favor. I doubt I can create many of the things I've played or seen so far, since they have Thwomp blocks, or even just because they have a "SMB3" or "Super Mario World" theme. It's kind of neat to see how someone set a world record in my course already, and it only took them about six seconds.
The one weird thing so far has been how my eyes must not be adjusted to the way they changed the visuals for the older games (the first "SMB," "SMB3" and then World). I think all of those games in their regular form were in a 4:3 ratio. Even when you connect an older console to a widescreen TV or play an emulated version on Virtual Console or the NES/SNES Classic, I'm pretty sure it only shows you what's in that 4:3 area. Apparently, in HD and 720p or 1080p, you wouldn't need those limits. The pixel "sprites" look bigger for some reason. Maybe I used to play these games on a smaller TV? Mine is only 32", so I wonder if they'd scale down smaller on a 55" display. Then, I probably just remember "SMB3" much differently, because there was the whole "heads up display" along the bottom (coins as a $ amount, a timer, the "P" gauge, your bonus cards from reaching the goal, ..." All of that seems moved around towards the TOP of the screen in levels with a "SMB3" theme.
So, it already sounds like they've captured my attention, and I'd have to keep playing and building to get more items and skins. I might come back after about 20 hours of gameplay to write another review.
