Currently, it's felt kind of hard to make new progress. I kept racing in the 150cc Flower Cup until I finally got that three star rating. I forget who made the breakthrough (possibly Rosalina, since I pick her pretty often). Then, I worked on Banana Cup, but I wasn't really improving. After a while, I remember going forward to Star (gold trophy, but no extra stars) and maybe Leaf (gold + one star). When I went ahead to Special Cup, I was lucky to finish above fifth place in a race!
I think the main unlocks stopped at 2,800 coins (since I have about 3,500 right now, and new things haven't been revealed for a while). I've read that something gold unlocks at 10,000 coins, but that might take another 60 hours (if I do it with the coin method).
Currently, I've been switching between 50cc and 150cc Grand Prix mode. What I could've done originally was to use a different driver each time (on 50cc or 100cc). Instead, I'm kind of going back now and completing things that way. I'm not sure if that unlocks more stickers (which you can't use now that MiiVerse went offline). I just want to get all of those and have it say 100/100. In addition to using a different character each time, I'm seeing what weird combinations come together by matching the fourth character with the fourth vehicle and the fourth glider. I believe that was Daisy with the Steel Diver (not very fast underwater for some reason). I forget the tires, but she had that ugly glider that looks like a flying squirrel. I noticed how that didn't let you float very long in the air (or you would drop pretty fast). Then, again, maybe the Steel Diver is really heavy and drags you down.
Remember how I was wondering about the best settings for me? I didn't write down the vehicle/wheels/glider combination last time, but I believe I had Rosalina as the base character, with these stats:
Speed 4.25
Acceleration 2.25
Weight 4.5
Handling 2.75
Traction 3.25
I try to collect the 10 coin maximum in each race. Have you ever been hit by lightning while you're already gliding, which takes away three coins, and then you need a Lakitu rescue, which takes away three more coins? I usually wonder if the CPU does that on purpose or at random. Anyway, I'm not sure how much your speed might increase with those extra coins. It seems hard to get a good acceleration rating with the heavier characters. I believe you can increase it near 3, though. Then, my other question would be whether you should sacrifice some top speed for acceleration, based on the idea that you might get pummeled with items and have to keep starting over from a lower speed. My goal is usually to stay far enough ahead that I can block basic attacks (red shells) with a banana or a shell trailing behind me.
I'm still trying to figure out handling and traction. It almost seems to vary with each vehicle. Some have sensitive steering or I wouldn't need to drift the corners, but I'm used to drifting vehicles, so I start the drift too early.
It probably doesn't help to keep changing vehicles, right? I mostly use Rosalina and Metal Mario, who I think are heavy characters (but there seems to be multiple groups within the "heavy" class). With Metal Mario, I believe I had a motorcycle (Flame Runner, with blue standard tires?). It came down to needing a first place in the final race (DK Jungle). I believe I fell once when trying to use the "shortcut" ramp near the starting line. So, when I was leading on the final lap, I tried to go conservative and take the regular path. Well, Toad boosted right past me from taking the shortcut. Then, I tried the Cup again with Rosalina. I believe I switched to the Capt. Falcon vehicle with sponge tires. I got a first place, then a second (meaning already no chance at three stars). I kept going anyway, and it wasn't even necessary to risk the shortcut on the final lap of the DK Jungle race. Basically, if you combined those two runs, I should be a three star driver. Grand Prix doesn't work that way, though! It's all about trying to have four "perfect" races in the same run.
I'm guessing I just need more practice. Plus, I wonder if there's a way to look at the list of tracks and figure out a vehicle that would perform well in all four races.
