When I came back, it looked like I had everything completed with three gold stars in 50cc and 100cc modes. I had only played about five Cups in 150cc. Guess what? In a couple days of playing four more hours, I think I've only improved one of those trophies from a single star to a two star performance (2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st).
That must be the answer to one of my earlier questions about when the difficulty ramps up. I haven't paid too much attention to which characters I'm selecting for the Cups. I may have been driving as Luigi when I improved my Flower Cup result. Metal Mario was getting me two or three first places to start a Cup, and then I would have one terrible race towards the end. I'm not sure if the courses get that much harder for the final race in a Grand Prix. That one with the rapids and all the Shy Guys annoys me in the anti-gravity sections. In fact, that's probably the most annoying feature of this particular game if you were asking me. There shouldn't be alternating sets of rules to reward "bad" bumper car driving in certain parts of the track.
I must not be done unlocking vehicles and custom parts yet. So far, it's happening with each 100 coins (I'm over 2,600 now). I'm trying to figure out the best driving style for me. For one thing, the ratings look different to me than what I recall from the Wii game. Weren't there ratings to tell you how a turbo boost would affect that vehicle? I'm not sure if everything boosts the same way in this game. Do the bikes get the super turbo for holding a drift? Too many questions!
The ratings must go up to six bars per category. I don't think I've seen a rating above 5 bars and another fraction yet. Acceleration is barely a "2" with heavy characters, but that's kind of the point. You're supposed to be skilled enough that you won't be slowing down and accelerating all the time. I'm definitely confused by the traction and handling ratings. I probably like low traction, because I'm used to drifting the turns. Whenever the handling or the traction are pretty high, I end up sliding into the grass or going off a ledge. There was a benefit, though, where it became easier to slide onto some shortcut ramps. I'm kind of wondering if tighter handling is for a driving style where you don't drift very much (sort of like "auto" from the Wii game?).
I wouldn't say that the computer drivers feel "cheap" in 150cc mode. I've had races where I hit walls and got passed. Blue shells have been pretty rare, although I think one of them did cost me a first place. Maybe I'm not in first place often enough to notice the blue shells?
So, that's kind of what's happening in my game right now. Instead of moving on to Cups where I haven't won a trophy yet, I keep going back to try and improve to a three star rating in Flower and Banana. I think I've scored up to 51 points in Banana, and they didn't even give me one star. I don't think I ever improved to all three star ratings in the Wii game after dozens of attempts. Then again, I was usually picking the manual drift setting.
If I'm at least up to 150cc and I can win over 1/3 of those races, does that mean I might be ready for some online races? I believe Wii U's online multiplayer modes are still working, but I wonder who would still be playing "Mario Kart 8" as a Wii U game when the Switch remake released last year. It was the best-selling game on the previous console (also a "pack-in" with my particular bundle).
I'm not sure about other observations. I have 57 of the stamps (now that MiiVerse ended at least a year ago). A few of them were unlocking in the Time Trial mode. I couldn't tell if those came from driving on the course for the first time, or if I had to beat a certain time.
Oh, yeah! Speaking of the stopwatch, WHERE IS IT during Grand Prix mode? It used to be possible to see how badly you thrashed the CPU drivers. Right now, I can barely tell who came in second place (I think it at least tells you the standings after you finish a race). Time Trial mode is also weird, because, wasn't there a Top 5 leaderboard in the Wii game? For this game, I'm not sure if they figured the number of tracks was too big to store that many results. Plus, it's more than just your character and a vehicle name this time. I think the only way to see the details of your best result was to press + or -. The charts are hard to read, unless it's trying to show you how you rank against a Nintendo staff ghost or online users. Even then, it doesn't tell you what time in minutes and seconds are represented by that graph. Wasn't this all much clearer on the Wii? I still feel stuck between liking some parts of that game even though this one is much better in terms of the graphics.
Basically, I don't know what Nintendo was trying to accomplish with "MK8." The stopwatch is too distracting or not an important part of the Grand Prix races? I can't think of any previous console game where it wasn't part of the main display. You know what? MAYBE it's on the GamePad, but I stick with the Pro controller (I wish they still made more of them). If I recall, the maps might be on the GamePad, too? Maybe I should start driving as the GamePad and compare that to the current experience. It seems like the other games got hard in 150cc mode, too. The original was probably the best example of that. I can't imagine mirror or 200cc, then!!
Pretty much, it's getting closer to becoming my favorite game from the series.
