I think the video I referenced in my title is located here:
https://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct/11-01-2018/
It also mentions a Treehouse: live presentation, but maybe that was on the day the video was released?
For starters, I don't own a Switch. When the newest SSB game was announced at E3, they still didn't wow me, because it sounded like there might only be the characters from the Wii U version with a few fighters coming back from previous games.
Then they started expanding the roster, and it felt like, "OK. Maybe this isn't just a 'port' of the Wii U game with all the DLC and some classic characters." My interest may have gone up again.
As they kept announcing characters, though, it was kind of like, "Well, that person just sounds like a clone (Nintendo labels them 'echo' fighters), and then a few new characters who might not be "cloned," but who are kind of on the fringes of me wanting them to join the game. I think that second group to be announced were characters like Daisy (echo of Peach), Dark Samus (echo of Samus?), Chrom (all the "Fire Emblem" characters start to get confusing, even though Robin seems unique), King K. Rool (another villain - but I wasn't one of the people who thought, "This game needs more bad guys."), and maybe Isabelle (I don't think I've played "Animal Crossing" since the original [on GameCube?]). Isabelle is also in "Mario Kart 8," but I probably haven't used her in a race.
(Potential spoilers start here) Well, to start off the Direct, I believe they tried to complete the roster. That only seemed to introduce two new characters: Ken Masters ("Street Fighter" series) and a Pokemon named Incineroar (from the Sun and Moon series). Ken is very similar to Ryu. Incineroar looked unique. Even at that time, I wasn't believing that those were the only new characters. At the end of the video, they were showing Piranha Plant, but saying that it won't be ready when the game releases in December. That was another weird choice. I don't think Piranha Plant was part of a recent "leak," though.
Then, it sounded like they plan to release five DLC characters (so this still isn't an Ultimate game without spending more money?). I think there were at least five new fighters in the last game: Lucas, Mewtwo, Roy (who were regular characters in at least one previous game), Ryu, Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta (that sounds like seven?). I wonder if some of the planned DLC fighters were unofficially leaked. I tried not to pay much attention to the news about that leak. Then IGN spoiled it for me, but I forget some of the fighters from that list. One was already revealed in the Direct as an assist trophy (meaning he's probably not playable?).
When you add everything up, it's either 80 or 82 fighters (Pokemon Trainer can call upon three different Pokemon). I can't really wrap my head around that! What I do know is how my interest kind of dropped again when they expanded the roster.
Of course, there's more than characters to this game. I just didn't know how to react to a few of the newer announcements. To go out of order, they revealed a few things on the pop out menu, which didn't seem too exciting. I mean, this was the first time they showed the Help icon? And another one called Options?
I guess the biggest "surprise" was a mode called Spirits. Some people already decoded what it said in that green lower left corner of the title screen. The longer Sakurai talked about it, the less I understood. First, to even collect a spirit, you have to fight characters besides that spirit (but that have similar abilities to the spirit?). Then, you're supposed to be thinking about how to equip a spirit to change your fighter's stats. I think past games just used stickers or the amiibo to adjust stats? It's hard to tell why they'd need to use spirits for this game. Then, he really lost me when the main spirit can have three other slots for support spirits.
I also think he was trying to introduce a main "campaign" or a one player story mode that's not just timed or stock battles. There was a whole video where I didn't understand the images and how you might play in that mode. It started with a cutscene to show how the fighters became spirits that was also really bizarre. Some of the CPU opponents started to look like Dark Link from the "Twilight Princess" storyline.
Basically, after all that, I wonder if I'm back to thinking it's just a newer Smash game with a few more characters and extra features. I probably shouldn't make that sound like a "negative," since I might not be able to add/suggest many more ideas than what they've already tried in previous games.
I believe he also mentioned how this might be the first game NOT to have trophies. Are you serious? I thought the idea of amiibo came from the trophies in the other games?!! It could be too complex to program them into the game, but I would think there's already some existing code for whatever trophies were in the Wii U game. I've barely played that one enough to remember the trophy gallery. I think "Melee" had my favorite collection of trophies.
There were other things about how online mode sounds much more complicated. I kind of understand them wanting to create a "ranking" system and then matching up people who should have similar skills. It sounds like they also want to consider where you live, though. It made me wonder how they did matchmaking in other games from the series (globally, with too much lag?).
So, that's a long "summary" of my reactions. I think I currently own a physical copy of every Smash game besides the ones for Nintendo 64 or 3DS. "Melee" still stands out as a favorite, although I've barely started playing every single character from the Wii U entry. Wii U might eventually take its place? "Brawl" seems to be the forgotten stepchild. I haven't played that one recently.
Another possibly cool thing seems to be how, all the amiibo I missed from the past four years might be getting restocked. I've already seen Pac-Man, but I got him on day one. My wish list has characters like Marth, Ike, Shulk, and the original Rosalina/Luma (I ended up buying her from the Mario Bros. series). I'm not sure about Cloud (although I have him as DLC), and I like the female Corrin more than the regular version (female Robin, too, but I don't think they ever released an alternative). Metaknight was released more than once, but I kept holding off on him. From the new characters, I do sort of like Inkling (never played "Splatoon," though - and other Inkling amiibo were on sale for a while). K. Rool has a weird pose. So does Daisy (she was already part of the Mario series). That might be all from the Smash series. I kept missing special edition Links, the "Breath of the Wild" champions, and some other oddballs like the Metroid two pack. Now, stores only stock the regular Samus - maybe the third amiibo I ever bought.
It will take me a while to proofread all of this! Of course, I could just trust that I tend to get the typing right on the first draft.
