One thing I noticed in the women's bracket (where I didn't have a chance to fill out an entry) is how a "chalk" bracket (the higher seed always wins) would have a 47-9 record right now. Every seed from 1 through 4 won the first round game. Believe it or not, one time a 16 did beat a #1 in the women's bracket (Harvard was 16 and Stanford was the 1?). You had to know that #12 Quinnipiac would beat Marquette. Otherwise, the 5 seeds were 3-0. The #6 seeds were undefeated in the opening round. I don't even think they had a .500 record or better for the men. Only #10 Oregon knocked out a #7 seed. Then, the 8/9 matchups had two minor "upsets" (California and Purdue). In the second round, you needed to know that Oregon would beat #2 Duke, Quinnipiac would win AGAIN (#4 Miami), and then #5 Ohio State would beat a higher seeded Kentucky team.
In the Sweet 16, I'd say the only upset has been Oregon continuing their streak by getting past #3 Maryland. Quinnipiac ran into South Carolina and lost by 42 points. The #1s are all surviving. Number 2 is 2-0 against #3, with one game still in progress.
I'm surprised how many brackets at the top of the leaderboard are putting South Carolina into the championship game before losing to Connecticut. It looks like Connecticut would face Baylor in the Final Four (assuming they both win another game). South Carolina would draw Notre Dame, and I think Notre Dame has a history of beating them. UConn and Notre Dame used to be in the same conference together. This season, they only played once, and it was a UConn win (their winning streak keeps going past 100 games).
For the men, I'm trying to check four different brackets to see if any of them could predict at least six Elite 8 teams. The bracket where I had the hardest time was the East (regional semifinals and finals at Madison Square Garden). Because of the name recognition for Duke, and then Villanova being a defending champion, I gave those two teams a lot more credit than even Florida or Wisconsin. Historically, I think you could look and see how those two schools keep reaching the Sweet 16 (Wisconsin) or the Elite 8 (Florida). There's very little chance that I would've picked South Carolina as a top 8 team, because all three brackets had them losing to Marquette in the first round. Now I've seen the games, and realize they have a top-level coach named Frank Martin, and an overlooked star in Sindarius Thornwell. Even in the "second chance" event, I picked Florida vs Baylor, and then Florida moving on to the Final Four. Florida is my last chance to get the national semifinalist correct from that quadrant.
In the West, only one bracket had a correct Elite 8 team (Gonzaga). I was REALLY (over)confident that Arizona was a top 3 team this season. I had even called Xavier a "dangerous team" on Facebook, but come on! How could they beat Arizona? In two brackets, I had Gonzaga losing to Notre Dame or West Virginia. In the real tournament, they did play West Virginia, but it was close win. My second chance bracket got BOTH games wrong in the Sweet 16 round, so I won't have any correct guesses about that Final Four representative. Right now, it's looking like Gonzaga. Assuming that's correct, the only teams that have a chance to play in that half of the championship game are Gonzaga, Florida, and South Carolina. Florida might be the least shocking (I think they're the only recent school to win back to back titles), but Gonzaga just doesn't have the history of advancing that far, and South Carolina have to be the "dark horse" of this whole tournament.
Then, you go over to what I would see as the "stronger" half of the overall bracket. In the Midwest, I didn't consider any other team besides Kansas in four out of four brackets (at least for the Elite 8). In the second chance, I didn't even advance Oregon past Michigan, but I did have one bracket showing Kansas vs Oregon. Oregon's game was REALLY close with a HOT Michigan team the other night. I can't really say any of those teams surprises me or that there won't be a strong Final Four representative who advances. I'm just surprised that Arizona and UCLA were the hyped Pac-10 teams, and now only Oregon represents their conference.
The South had to be my most stable region in the whole bracket. I always had UNC coming to the Elite 8 from the top half. It's just that they did it against weaker competition from Winthrop and Minnesota a few times. One bracket did get UNC vs Butler correct. The lower half of the bracket was probably the hardest set of picks in the whole tournament, even though most of them went according to the seeds. UCLA was either overrated, or they got unlucky to face Kentucky in the Sweet 16. Two of my original three brackets favored them. One actually put Kentucky through to the championship game. In the second chance, I stuck to just a "chalk" matchup of UNC vs Kentucky. Since UNC were my picks to win it all in the first bracket I filled out, I'm still sticking with them. Think of the path Kentucky might have to take to compete for a championship. They beat Wichita State, and then UCLA. North Carolina is next. Kansas could be after that (Oregon at "worst"), and then the last game might be the "easiest" opponent "on paper."
It looks like, in the three initial brackets, my best composite bracket had five Elite 8 teams. I needed the second chance entry to get Florida correct, and South Carolina and Xavier didn't get credit in any bracket.
Did anyone see the "Wiscorida" game? I know it must've been live past midnight in my time zone. I'd have to watch some replays of the highlights to verify a few details, but the second half and the first overtime came down to these two shots that you might see in a game of H-O-R-S-E! Wisconsin needed a three just to tie, so a player who looked like he stumbled a little bit took off on one foot, released the shot in midair, and it went through the hoop. After that, I'm not sure what the Florida players thought of him doing the "Discount Double Check/championship belt" gesture to Aaron Rodgers in the stands. Well, then you got to overtime, where Wisconsin was holding a lead most of the time. They were still ahead by two points, when Florida had 4.0 seconds to inbound and dribble to the other end of the court. One player (Chiozza?) received the ball on the run, dribbled through two or three defenders, got to the three point arc, took off on one leg, released the ball, and HIS SHOT went into the basket!!! Twice in one game, with both teams making that type of shot? I wondered why Wisconsin didn't foul, but then I remembered they still had the lead.
I guess it's back to the live games until I know more?
