Afterwards, there tends to be question and answer time, and someone made a pretty popular argument. "One way to disprove the existence of God is the existence of evil." If you start to think about it, that person just claimed that God is good (not someone who would intentionally create evil). When God is good, or people don't want to consider God as a source of evil, it seems like only a few "logical" conclusions stick out. Human suffering could be self-inflicted. Humans could be a mixture of good and evil. Humans could make each other suffer. In all of those cases, how would the solution come from any type of human action or a human government? Your judgment would be corroded by self-inflicted pain, by the dilution of good and evil trying to coexist, or a human organization like a government could become too powerful and start to pick on the "weaker" folks.
I just wondered if atheists have ever given a rational explanation, or done experiments to test whether "evil" exists, or if it's just a word that people use to describe unpleasant feelings when they think themselves or someone else has been treated unfairly (would the bully who victimizes someone else not get good feelings from their actions?).
When I think about it some more, it's not just atheism that believes in the existence of evil. At least one or two major religions talk about the nature of evil and how the world is an unresolved conflict of malicious forces trying to destroy everything and goodness wanting to preserve everything (or at least the good stuff). I know the Bible gets criticized for the verses about judgment or asking for a whole group of people to be killed, but what were those people doing for the past 10, 20, 50, or 100 years? When Noah built a boat to escape a global flood, it talks about how God waited until 100% of the people (except Noah's family?) were only thinking 100% evil thoughts 100% of the time. That's what I would expect in a world where people have freedom and are asked to make choices. God doesn't seem to interrupt the bad choices until they've reached a level where it would be hard or impossible to turn back. Delaying judgment until someone has made too many wrong decisions doesn't sound unloving or unjust to me. The judgment always comes, but it makes you think or realize that if there were any other solution, God would have tried that before carrying out the judgment.
Other times in the Bible, it's pretty clear why a country or a people group are being judged. A port city in what would now be called Lebanon built a fortress where they were stockpiling gold and other luxuries while the common people suffered. I think, first, Nebuchadnezzar burned their city walls down. If you look at the life of Nebuchadnezzar, he became a wild animal for a period of time, and then I think his heir lost the kingdom to an invasion by the Medes and the Persians. Alexander the Great destroyed a rebuilt version of the Lebanese city, and then he fought battles all the way to Persia (we'd probably say "Iran"), taking their empire away. It keeps going in that kind of a pattern. Alexander got discouraged or depressed that there was nothing left to conquer, abused alcohol, and then he died in his 30s. I guess my point in all of that is to say, over time, the people who were cruel or violent to Israel got punished, but the punishers usually went too far and got their judgment, too.
I also don't understand why atheists can talk about evolutionary theories or natural selection when it comes to understanding Earth or outer space, but they tend to want to protect "weaker" members of society from abuses by someone in a more advantageous position. Is the evolutionary process about something "stronger" wiping out or replacing a previous species that didn't adapt to a changing or hostile environment? Then why would you translate that into a system of government where the people with the most "power" want to make sure the less adaptable people won't get left behind? Who decides what's a "good" or "right" pace for social changes, and why would it be more advantageous for the slower people to get caught up?
It just seems like, if you were to ask corporations, they want protection from the government. I just heard Sen. Al Franken in a hearing this morning, and he was trying to say that it's the government's role to protect consumers against corporations. Huh? Can't consumers decide not to support a company with their wallet? If the government passes a rule making it too hard to use coal for electricity, and then businesses comply (that doesn't sound "evil" to me), what happens if electricity rates go up for people who can't afford to pay higher electric bills? That gets into other territory with putting the "greater good" of the Earth itself ahead of humans sometimes.
So, I basically don't even know why atheists think evil exists. It's hard to talk about certain "moral" topics, because there's so much "gray" area in popular culture. Doesn't it violate the rights of someone in a sexual relationship if their partner whips them or causes physical pain? Then why did a book series about those lifestyles become a best seller? I've heard the argument that the woman spends lots of time reading or signing legal contracts, so it's basically her fault, and nothing was done to break the "law" of those contracts. In other words, as long as something is "legal," you don't have to ask whether it's "moral"?
