Right now, a bunch of the rumors are based around the hardware. Isn't the purpose of hardware to play games, though? How could they sell any units without knowing what games will be on the system?
So, pretty much, my frustration would be, unless they start to announce games by October, who would want to buy the actual machine?
I know that Wii U gets criticized for a lack of games, but it's actually the system I want THE MOST right now, and that I'd buy before PS4. On PS4, I know that stuff I was looking forward to ("Street Fighter 5," "Star Wars: Battlefront," "No Man's Sky," [Name of TMNT cel-shaded game?]) has released to mediocre reviews, or they keep "patching" the software to add features that were missing at launch. "Street Fighter 5" looks like cartoon pornography when you see the female fighters. "Battlefront" doesn't remind me of the cool PC games where yes, it's a shooter, but it doesn't feel as generic as other FPS games. Even when I saw a video review, the new soundtrack was AWFUL. There's already award-winning John Williams music, and they didn't reuse that?
Who knows if the novelty of that "second screen" on the GamePad would wear off quickly. From what I can tell, you don't absolutely NEED it for "Smash" and "Mario Kart"? I'd rather use the Pro controller for Kart, and then a GameCube adapter for Smash. There are other cool sequels ("DKC Tropical Freeze") or what sound like new titles ("Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker") where I'm almost DYING to play them.
To kind of answer my title question, I know that "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" will be on the NX, but I don't think of that as an NX Zelda game. Wasn't the last original Zelda game on a console "Skyward Sword"? That was actually the SECOND Zelda game in the Wii's software library if I'm remembering correctly. I don't think any Nintendo console has gone without an original Zelda game, and didn't a few consoles get TWO Zelda adventures? On the NES, I can think of two games. On the SNES, only one (which I still haven't played). On the N64, "Majora's Mask" felt like it came out REALLY fast after "Ocarina of Time." I'm thinking that "Breath of the Wild" could be the first game that almost misses its intended console generation, or comes at the end of a struggling console's lifetime. I guess "Skyward Sword" kind of released late in the timeline for the Wii? I remember driving way out of town to find a Best Buy that still had it in stock. With "Breath of the Wild," it kind of reminds me of "Twilight Princess." Wasn't TP always going to be a GameCube title? They already had "Wind Waker." Then, it seems as if they delayed it, or just released a "port" to the Wii that added a motion control gimmick for a few of the weapons (although I've only played the rare GCN version). Something's also different between GCN and Wii. To get Link to be right-handed (since many people hold a Wii remote in their right hand), I think they "mirrored" the whole game on the Wii.
That's probably my "rant" for the day. I was looking more into 3DS to see why Nintendo's handhelds are able to outsell even the classic consoles (NES, SNES). I'm not really impressed by the specifications (400 pixels by 240 pixels on that top screen in 3D mode?). I've seen 3DS on display. Usually, I'd have to turn down the 3D effect. I have a GB Advance, and I even used the "transfer pack" for N64 "Mario Tennis" (my created Game Boy characters can play in the N64 version, but they're not really competitive with the CPU characters). I don't even carry my cell phone 24/7 when I leave the house, so it's hard to picture why I'd have a 3DS outside the house.
With all the rumors, I think I've been watching Nintendo Voice Chat (IGN video podcast) to hear them try to figure them out. The Pokemon President or CEO says they're working on a Pokemon game. OK. The main guy at Ubisoft (?) is excited. If Ubisoft makes all the "Just Dance" games, then they've NEVER given up at least partial support on Wii or even the Wii U. I only have one of the original "Just Dance" games. That doesn't really mean that "Assassin's Creed" might get an NX version. I've been annoyed at the lack of EA Sports or 2K Sports titles on any Nintendo system lately. I got "Madden '13" for the Wii U, and then they pulled support. Anyway, one of the rumors was Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario within the first six months of NX's launch. Well, it seems like Zelda is already confirmed, and then Pokemon gave their support. When was the last console Mario game released? I think that was "Super Mario 3D World" in late 2013 (Do you count "Super Mario Maker"?). They've been sitting on Metroid for what seems like FOREVER. I'm remembering that something called "Other M" came out on Wii, but people didn't like it (I can't comment, and it might only be in stock at Target). Before that, "Prime 3: Corruption" came to Wii, and then the whole trilogy was remastered (glad I bought that before it became rare). "Star Fox" finally came to Wii U, but not with 9 or 10 ratings. I saw some videos of gameplay and thought they made strange choices for the character voices (Peppy is a country singer?). "Splatoon" is supposed to be good. I got to play it on a store display without developing a strong opinion.
Whatever the "Codename NX" is going to be, I'm just more surprised they aren't "leaking" the names of games that could sell 10,000,000 copies yet. The closest thing I've heard (still a rumor) would be that they want to port "Mario Kart 8," the newest "Smash," and other games that have good online features ("Super Mario Maker"?) for the people who skipped Wii U. What would that mean for online modes on the Wii U, though?
