Before I get to that, I just noticed how one league's schedule has worked out. In my division, the records are 2-0, 2-0, 1-1, 0-2, 0-2. In the other division, the records are 2-0, 2-0, 1-1, 0-2, 0-2! It gets better! My division features week 3 games between 2-0 vs 2-0, and then 0-2 vs 0-2. The other other division has 2-0 vs 2-0, and 0-2 vs 0-2. Basically, if nobody ties, the standings will be 3-0, 2-1, ?-?, 1-2, 0-3. I'd hate to be the 0-3 team at that point. That leaves 1-1 vs 1-1, which is my game. I guess the winner of that determines which division is stronger after three weeks. I could either stay a game out of first place or be looking at 1-2.
In my family league, both divisions are mirror images, too: 2-0, 1-1, 1-1, 0-2. This week, 2-0 plays 0-2, and then 2-0 plays 0-2, and all the 1-1 teams are playing against each other. How often does that happen? Unfortunately, I'm an 0-2, and I have the fewest fantasy points (-17 compared to 7th place) of any team. It's still early, but I don't want to fall even further behind in that category, because it cost me a playoff spot last season.
Then you come to the actual players and matchups. Does "logic" tell you that if the Texans lead the league in sacks, and they're allowing just 13.0 points per game, and the Patriots are starting the third string rookie QB, who didn't throw the ball more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage in week 2, they will have a big Thursday night game? Now that I'm thinking about it, how quickly would you have to sack a guy who was throwing mostly horizontal screen passes, instead of hanging around in the pocket? Or, does reality say that the Patriots will be 3-0 with no Tom Brady, with no Rob Gronkowski for most of the season, and a 27-0 victory on Thursday night?
Here's why it's funny or ironic. In week 2, I had these defensive options: Texans, Chiefs, Patriots (from waivers). I knew the Texans were 0-2 against the Chiefs last season, allowing at least 27 points in each game. "Logically," they were going to win 19-12 and not even allow a touchdown, right? Their fantasy score was 15. The Chiefs were a bad choice in week 1 (0 fantasy points [I didn't actually use them]). I didn't know whether to trust them, or if they'd be slow starters. Meanwhile, the Patriots were playing the Dolphins, and they usually dominate the Dolphins. "Logically" they'd be a good pick? Realistically, they'd be ahead 21-0 or 24-0, allow 450 total yards, and need a last minute INT to seal the 31-24 win? I think the Chiefs D/ST scored 5, and the Patriots had 3.
Now, let's analyze week 3. On Thursday night, the Patriots were hosting the Texans. Maybe the Texans don't travel well? Maybe they'd "regress" a little bit after performances of 10 and 15 fantasy points? Still, try to think of a more tempting matchup this week (possibly the Dolphins hosting the Browns, which I'm counting on in my other league?). Even if it wasn't the Texans, would you expect the Patriots to be a top 5 defense this week? They've been consistent (3, 3), but consistently below average. Were they due for a shutout or 15 fantasy points?
I don't know why I try to understand this league or the fantasy game. Odell Beckham, Jr. was my first round pick and #2 overall. Then I'm looking at his October matchups. He gets "shadowed" by Josh Norman this Sunday. That's the same guy who "body rocked" him last season for Carolina (whatever that term means). Odell also got suspended for too much shoving or taking a swing at Norman. If he's not suspended, he gets games at Minnesota and at Green Bay. Have you seen those two defenses in action this season? The Packers' D-line held Adrian Peterson to a low yardage total and then he tore his meniscus. In week 1, the Vikings' defense scored probably their only two TDs of the game. None of what I wrote actually addresses passing defense, or means that Odell might not have a good game.
It's just weird how, if I was trying to intentionally start a low scoring defense each week, that might not work (although the Raiders are horrible to this point). Somehow, I've managed to lose 24 points in just the past two weeks from second-guessing in different ways: first by benching the "hot hand" based on last year's results, and then by jumping on the "good defenses stop rookie QBs" bandwagon. For that last part, I was wondering if there's actually much "logic" to thinking a rookie would play poorly in his first career start. From the perspective of the defense, how do they watch film to prepare for a player who hasn't started any NFL games? The Patriots' offensive line shouldn't be any different than the one that usually gives Brady time to throw most of his passes. From what I understand, the Patriots basically have a "system" where no individual player is more important than the overall unit. At this point, you could almost argue that Brady is very overrated, and the Patriots could be winning games with replacement players (although, maybe not by as many points as with Brady in the lineup?).
I see how it's almost 1 AM, so I shouldn't be awake this late.
