The first thing was how I bought a newer Blu-ray player, which had been discontinued for some reason. For 2015, I believe Sony released these model numbers: 1500, 3500, 5500, 6500. For 2017, I've only heard of these: 1700, 3700, 6700. Where is 5700? The 5500 looked like a perfect fit for me. When you step up to 6500 (not a number I like; I've started to get OCD about avoiding certain numbers), it gives you a 4K HDMI jack and "upscaling." That wouldn't make sense right now, since I don't know when I'll own a 4K TV set (never mind how the machine wouldn't play any of the newer 4K Blu-ray discs!).
Here's the funny thing. I don't have a 3D capable TV yet, but I DO have at least one Blu-ray ("Gravity") that looked amazing in IMAX 3D, and made me not want to watch it in 2D for the home version. The point is, with model 5500, you get the 3D feature and everything from 1500 and 3500, but it stops short of the 4K features. Plus, the 5500 was on sale for only $85 after retailing for $140 and sometimes going on sale for $110.
To introduce "PlayStation Now," I'll first start by going back to when PS4 was being introduced or released. You know how it's not technically "backwards compatible" with PS3 games? I doubt it's because of the discs (both should be Blu-ray format?). There's something with the programming code to make it easier for developers to write PC software and quickly adapt it to PS4 and XB1.
Well, imagine if, instead of needing to play an older game on the console, you just joined a server that hosts the game out on the Internet? The server could do most of the processing, and send back a video feed to your console and TV. That's sort of a way to include "backwards compatibility" on the PS4, right? That's my understanding of how the PlayStation Now service must work.
Now, combine the idea of PlayStation 4/Now with an app that's compatible with newer Sony Blu-ray players. According to the packaging, the 5500 can run the PlayStation Now "app."
I don't even know how it all works yet, but I had to look into one other detail. The PlayStation Now app requires a controller. With a console, that sounds easy enough (at least one should come in the bundle when you buy it). For a Blu-ray player, you'd have to buy it separately. Then, they don't even include a USB cable with those extra controllers (since one is already supposed to come with the console?). When you use it with the Blu-ray player (assuming I ever get that far), I'm pretty sure it won't be a wireless accessory. It probably stays wired via USB the whole time (there's a front USB port on the Blu-ray player).
Then you come to the controllers. Yes, you could get black, but isn't that pretty blah or expected? I know they've released some other colors. I wish I had started trying to collect PS4 controllers last year, because this one looks so cool:
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/accessories/dualshock-4-wireless-controller-ps4/
You have to scroll down and pick the 20th anniversary edition. Why would they make that limited or rare? I know it only changes the body and grips to light gray and replaces one logo. Just the rarity somehow makes you want it. I've only seen the white up close a few times, but it seems a little plain.
I actually got the "gray blue" version. It's packaged like it goes with a game called "Uncharted 4," but to me, I can't see anything like logos or other marks to make it specific to that game. It just seems like a lighter blue version of the "wave blue" controller. I'm not sure if that controller will end up limited edition, or just the headphones from the same game.
You know what's weird about this set of controllers in general? With the built-in lithium batteries, those weren't designed to last forever. I'm not sure if they're replaceable, or if you just recycle the whole controller. That seems like you won't be able to use them past a certain date in the future, unlike how retro controllers from Atari and Coleco probably still work 30 years later.
See the part of the controller that glows or lights up? When it's not powered on, that looks kind of ugly to me (a really thick white area on an otherwise clean design). The thing is, how often would you be staring at the back of the controller when it's powered off?
What bugged me is how, after I bought that controller and the charging cable, I lost track of the receipt. I hardly EVER do that with any kind of receipt. My hope is that I won't have to return anything.
I guess the next step is to download and read the full instructions from the Blu-ray player. Why are those manuals put online these days? I'd be curious how long it takes to charge a PS4 controller, and what tells you when its fully charged? Could I plug it into a computer USB port just for charging?
With the PS "Now" service, I'm not sure if we have a fast enough download speed. Weren't PS3 games usually in 720p HD or better? When I "rent" digital movies, I pick the 720p version (my TV is 768p but not full 1080p). It takes longer than the running time of the movie to finish downloading. With a service like Netflix (no advanced buffering), what I noticed was, they probably did try to give us a 720p video signal or better, but the sound was downgraded to just regular stereo (not 5.1 or full surround).
Basically, I have no idea if that service would be usable or not. I'm not sure what games are available that would interest me. There are also different ways to pay for the service. I think the monthly subscription includes a certain set of games, and that might be the ONLY way to play them. Other games let you "rent" them for a few different amounts of time (one day? three days? up to a month?). By the time you pay for a month, it might be more expensive than the digital version or a physical copy, but if they're PS3 games, I'm not sure how you get a brand new PS3 system anymore.
Lots of jumping around to different topics, right? I'm not even sure why I'm trying to be a Wii U and PS4 player in the current generation (if Wii U counts as the same gen, and nobody seems to understand codename NX yet). The other strange thing could be, will I be able to buy the current PS4, or will they discontinue that soon and only offer the "Neo"? I have a library of games for both machines, at least one controller for each, and still no job to pay for a console! My priorities are all wrong (besides how the stuff I'm buying has either disappeared already or wouldn't have been around if I kept waiting).
