I'm not sure if I can say things without remaining "spoiler free." I also have a pretty wide definition of spoilers. From what I can tell, only part of the original cast is back. Leonardo's voice changed (although I didn't like how the first voice was the guy from "Jacka**" on MTV). I forget how Megan Fox looked in the first movie (like "April," or just a version of herself). This movie didn't really have me buying into her playing the April character. One scene people complain about has her sort of stealing clothes while continuing to walk and track someone down. From what I remember, she puts on a pleated mini skirt over top of whatever dark pants she was already wearing. How does it go from that to her in just the skirt and long socks/stockings? I definitely like women and not guys, but those images didn't really feel sexually charged to me.
Shredder doesn't seem to be the same actor as last time. It was also hard to buy into him as "The Shredder" - possibly because he only gets to wear the helmet for about two minutes of screen time. Otherwise, it's just an unmasked Asian man who looks kind of grumpy and says barely enough to get the point across.
Definitely the biggest risk (which I don't think paid off) was rewriting most of the Casey Jones character. I'm not sure if they were trying to make him a low-budget Chris O'Donnell from the buddy cop TV show with LL Cool J ("CSI: Los Angeles"??). Casey is supposed to be this dude with a mullet who wants to avenge all of the street crime in his neighborhood. He likes hockey and usually wears a mask. They do get into that side of him, but it's only AFTER establishing him as this yapping police officer with a crew cut and only some stubble that could be a thin mustache or a goatee.
I didn't even recognize "Rocksteady" as a personality from the WWE game: "Sheamus." They had a line of dialogue where he was "Finnish." The only purpose of that seemed to be a sentence where he was saying "finish it" and made it sound like "Finnish s***" or something stupid. In a bar scene, he has a more heavy or exaggerated IRISH accent, and isn't he Irish in real life, or is Sheamus an Irish character that he plays?
For the transformation of Rocksteady and Bebop (which were always their birth names somehow), a scientist is giving this weird explanation that human DNA still contains information from your animal ancestors. Never mind how, in creationism, humans have zero animal ancestors. It's strange how those ancestors would be a rhinoceros or a warthog.
There's one item that I don't want to spoil, but it might be a spoiler to talk about its "chain of custody," since I assumed it was kind of important to the overall plot. One villain gives it to someone else. April tries to steal it. She is chased into an alley. Someone else shows up to stop the would-be muggers, but the police show up, by which point this item has been flying all over the screen. April and another person simply run away from the police without the supposedly important item. Luckily, I think April had another artifact that she didn't lose in all the fighting, and that prevented a plot hole where Donatello is able to study a small sample on what looks like a microscope slide.
So, now that the police took custody of the possibly important plot device, what will happen next? You'd think that the Turtles or April already know an officer from the fight in the alley, but that came at a time when he was suspended from active duty. Instead, he has to be part of some strange plan to break into the police building by getting a celebrity to distract the front desk into taking selfies (it's really bizarre and hard to keep from laughing). After that, I actually lost track of who had custody of the supposedly important item, and when I came home to read plot descriptions of the movie, they don't even mention what happened to this item. The next time it's seen, the Turtles are trying to make a pivotal decision, but as a viewer, I wasn't even questioning, "HOW DID THEY GET THAT?!!"
There's one action scene where I was taken out of movie mode and just thinking scientifically. A cargo plane doesn't notice that four oversized Turtles are adding weight? That plane just happens to be on the same course as another plane, holding Rocksteady and Bebop, even though the Turtles didn't plan to cross paths with it? They're standing on the outside of the other plane? Don't those things move at 300 to 500 MPH cruising speed, in thin air that might give you frostbite? I know it's "just a movie," but still. Rocksteady and Bebop have always been dimwits, but why would you (possible spoiler) shoot out the entire cockpit of a plane while you're still inside of it? Would they be less likely to die in a crash than the Turtles (end possible spoilers)? At the end of that action sequence, I don't think it's ever shown or explained how either the villains or the Turtles got back to NYC.
The ending had surprises, but sort of in a way that weakened the plot. Wouldn't between two and four enemies mean better odds against a team of four heroes? Instead, they sort of have seven heroes (counting the human additions), and a few of the baddies keep canceling each other out. There's an important device being guarded by a martial artist, but from what I could tell, that person was knocked down by maybe a clipboard or a three-ring binder. Huh?
The main boss fight was just a swirl of graphics where I couldn't tell what happened. Donatello somehow put electricity into his bo staff? Why wouldn't the other Turtles modify their weapons?
Overall, I think the negative stuff that dragged it down was the language (Casey also says s***, and when does Donatello ever make statements like, "That's a big a** magnet"?). I have some reprints of the first few comics, so I could go back to see if profanity was ever their MO, but I doubt it.
I can see how some people also compared elements of the plot to "The Avengers." It's just hard to tell what's going on with modern movies. People don't know how to write good stories? They haven't read many interesting books? All their ideas are recycled from other franchises? There was even a Transformers cameo in this TMNT movie. It's like, why, other than to remind you that the same guy directed/produced(?) all of the "Transformers" series (which I've barely watched).
Better be going for now.
