: This is a joke, right? The most honest,
: authentic, consistent (and consistently on
: the right side of history) candidate who is
: ACTUALLY of the people, by the people, and
: for the people is at the bottom of your
: list??? Bernie Sanders is the best
: candidate in my lifetime and perhaps in
: multiple lifetimes.
On the right side of current history? The side of past history? The side of future history (I'm not even sure how to make that claim, because humans don't influence the path of history)?
From what I've heard, he's been hanging around in Washington for 20+ years, passing very few bills. Not sure if that's media bias, though.
: Banks that
: are "too big to fail" are quite
: literally too big to exist. We should not
: and cannot have financial institutions so
: big that if they do what they did to cause
: the great recession in '08 it tanks
: virtually the whole economy.
I'd have to research the name of the regulations, but there were rules where a bank was supposed to write a certain percentage of mortgages to people who had no money to make a down payment, or borrowed the maximum amount based on their earnings at the time. I wonder what would've been the penalty for banks not making those mortgages?
: Bernie is all about civil rights and always
: has been. He's not like Hillary who only
: adopts those views when it politically
: benefits her. She didn't support same sex
: marriage until it became the more popular
: view. Bernie has been supporting gay rights
: all along.
I haven't really understood that from the start. When you turn a gay couple into being "married," it impacts someone who has to write the certificate, perform the ceremony, ... I wondered if civil unions were possible (all weddings would be a "civil union" through the state, and then a church could issue "marriage" licenses for people who want a religious marriage). Somehow, with goofy things like income taxes, married people pay less, so that becomes an issue.
: Hillary is on record as
: referring to young black men and teens as
: "super predators" while Bernie
: actually marched with MLK for civil rights.
Then why doesn't he get many Black votes?
: Bernie is the only candidate who understands
: that climate change is a VERY serious matter
: and something we need to deal with NOW.
: Heck, nothing else will matter if a few
: generations from now the planet is barely
: habitable. And these things will lead to
: more wars, too, because food supplies will
: dwindle and people will get desperate.
If things like ethanol are part of the plan, I'm not seeing how that helps the food supply. You literally need to use land to grow energy, instead of edible food.
: Bernie is the only candidate that wants to
: have America catch up to the rest of the
: developed world. Tuition free public
: college isn't a radical idea when so many
: countries in Europe have that. Countries
: that aren't nearly as wealthy as America, by
: the way. Health care as a right of all
: citizens isn't a radical idea as so many
: other developed countries have that. All
: you need to do is exactly what Bernie
: says... make the rich pay their fair share
: of taxes.
What is a "fair share"? Some "rich" people have probably paid as much into the system as I'll earn in my whole life. They're not getting to take that share back out again. The arguments about this point are silly, too. They'll talk about how the secretary pays I guess 25% of a $35,000 salary (it only increases to 25% after a certain number), but if the CEO pays 15% or 20% on $250,000 of "capital gains," which is the larger amount of money? Capital gains are one of the rates that are lower than regular "income," but the more you mess with that, the more money flows to foreign countries with LOWER percentaqe rates. Why not "catch up" to the rest of the world's tax rates?
: Here's a question... Why the hell do the
: rich and corporations get welfare!? Highly
: profitable companies get government welfare
: that they don't even need. Some companies
: like G.E. actually have a tax rate after
: their welfare of negative numbers.
I would guess, because it's offered to them? Believe me, corporations are a pain. Why did DirecTV sell out to AT&T? Customers didn't have a say. Why is the small business movie chain in this area selling out to AMC? Why are retail stores trying to leave?
: Also, people are so stuck on
: "socialism" while he is about
: "democratic socialism". We
: already have socialism in America with
: things like social security, roads, fire
: & police, high schools, etc. People
: also get hung up on this "big
: government" terminology. It's not
: about how much the government does but doing
: it effectively. Bernie can see what needs
: to be done.
Out of that list:
Social Security - I personally don't want it. I'll work until 75 or 80 if I can. There's no way to remove yourself from the program that I know of, besides tax evasion.
Roads - Kasich would give that money back to the states.
Fire and police - I thought states or local governments pay for them? Some firemen might even be volunteers.
High school - We have local votes on the school budget, and, once you do the math, it's not even about the students! They'll ask permission to close multiple schools. They want money to turn schools into an office for the school board. Those buildings aren't office space, so they should be given upgrades or remodeling, with the public paying for it (actually, not the poor neighborhoods, which are tax-exempt, but allowed to vote on making someone else pay the cost). Why do I care where a bunch of government folks do their job? Rent a trailer or something. Focus on the students.
: He, like anyone with a brain, can see how we
: need to grow renewable energies and move
: away from fossil fuels for the good of the
: planet.
From what I can tell, the moderate view is do we need coal? Yes. Do we need oil? Yes. Do we need natural gas? Yes. Do we need nuclear? Yes. Do we need wind? Yes. Do we need solar? Yes. Why would a government ruin the whole economy of coal towns or create a reason to leave and seek jobs somewhere else? There isn't one energy solution that's more important than all of the options.
: He can see (as anyone who has
: checked the facts) that raising the minimum
: wage is good for all not just the workers
: but it allows people to spend more which
: makes businesses boom more which creates
: more jobs which gives more people money to
: spend, etc.
From what I've seen, it just raises the price of food and rent. I wouldn't even want to look for apartments in the places that have $15/hour wages.
